Itinerary Part-11: Meghalaya and Tripura
Dear Reader,
Continuing on my journey as a Solo traveller across India (links to other itineraries at the end of the post), I will enter the region which has been very marginally discovered as far as tourism is concerned. Even while looking for support on developing itinerary for this region, I found people totally unaware of the places in my "to visit" list. This "Paradise Unexplored" is relatively untouched and isolated from the mainland India. And these unexplored regions have always intrigued me. In this leg of the trip, I'll be visiting the first two of the Seven Sisters states, Meghalaya and Tripura. Meghalaya, which translates to "abode of clouds" in Sanskrit, is the wettest region of India. Tripura, is the third smallest state of India, constituting a measly 0.3% of the total population of India.
As with all the other Itineraries, I've had help from friends, fellow bloggers, tourism department of Meghalaya and Tripura, travel companies and readers, providing me various inputs on availability of local transports, places to visit, places to stay, etcetera, to develop this itinerary. And, as mentioned in previous posts, this itinerary is loosely based on various ideal situations. Thus, following it may not be possible due to reasons out of our hand during the trip.

So here's the itinerary for the eleventh leg of my All India Solo Trip in the state of Meghalaya and Tripura:
Day 1: Tura. The first stop in the state of Meghalaya will be the headquarter of the West Garo Hills, Tura, which is situated at the foot of the Tura Peak. Since I would be reaching here after a road travel of around 12-14 hours from Siliguri, this day is meant for rest.
Day 2: Tura Peak. On the next day, I'll trek to the Tura Peak, depending on the climate. The peak offers marvelous views of the hills with a backdrop of the curves of the mighty river Brahmaputra. Night stay at Tura town.
Day 3: Rongbang Falls. Next stop, is the Rongbang Falls, which is on the way to Williamnagar from Tura. These falls are clearly visible from the highway, but the real beauty of it can be experienced when one goes down to the bottom of the falls, which is clustered on both sides by bamboo trees. Night stay at Williamnagar.
Day 4: Siju caves. Next stop, is one of the longest cave in the Indian sub-continent, with magnificent limestone rock forming an impressive chain of stalagmites and stalactites. Night stay back at Williamnagar.
Day 5: Shillong. Next stop, is the capital city of the state of Meghalaya, Shillong, which is a dream destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Located on Khasi Hills, the city offers a picturesque landscape which is unmatched by any other place.
Day 6: Mawphlang, Mawjymbuin Caves. The first visit on this day will be of the sacred forest of Mawphlang, which is being preserved by traditional religious sanction since ancient times. This forest has in offer various forms of plants, flowers, orchids and butterflies, which makes it an ideal location for nature lovers. Also, on this day, I'll visit the Mawjymbuin caves, which are located at the wettest place on earth, Mawsynram, with offering of spectacular stalagmites. Night stay back at Shillong.
Day 7: Cherrapunjee. Next stop in Meghalaya, is the scenic town of Cherrapunjee, the second wettest place on earth. The only place in India to receive rainfall throughout the year, has some marvelous scenic landscapes, which is a treat to the eye.
Day 8: Mawlynnong. Next stop, and the final one in the state of Meghalaya, is the cleanest village in India, Mawlynnong. Other than being famous for the cleanliness, it is also famous for live root bridges and peculiar natural phenomenon of boulder balancing on another rock. Overnight travel to Dharmanagar.
Day 9: Unakoti. Now, as I enter the state of Tripura, the first stop will be Unakoti. This place has numerous rock carvings, murals and waterfalls which are a marvel to behold. Night stay back at Dharmanagar.
Day 10: Agartala. The next stop in the state of Tripura will be its capital city, Agartala, located at the banks of Howrah river. This beautiful city holds an a special mention in the scriptures of Mahabharata, and this historical-cum-mythological mentions are very evidently visible in the various ancient temples within the city.
Day 11: Ambassa. The final stop of this leg of the journey will be at Ambassa. This city, is also famous for its ancient temples with rich culture. Night stay at Dharmanagar.
From here, I'll proceed to Aizawl, Mizoram, to continue on my journey across India as a solo traveller.
