Itinerary Part 5- MAHARASHTRA
Dear Readers,
Having covered up the southern region of India (links to the itineraries at the end of the post), I'll be gradually moving up during my All India solo trip, starting from the central western state of Maharashtra. The second most populous and third largest state by area of the country, has vast historical significance having seen rules by the Maurya, Chalukya, Mughal and the mighty Maratha Empire amongst others. Other than these, there is the beautiful, and yet vastly secluded Konkan region with serene and picturesque beaches, which includes the Goa State as well.
As with all the other Itineraries, I've had help from friends, fellow bloggers, tourism department of Maharashtra, travel companies and readers, providing me various inputs on availability of local transports, places to visit, places to stay, etcetera, to develop this itinerary. And, it goes without saying that, this itinerary is loosely based on various ideal situations. Thus, following it may not be possible due to reasons out of our hand during the trip.
So here's the itinerary for the fifth leg of my All India Solo Trip in the state of Maharashtra:
Day 1: Kolhapur. I will start this leg of the trip from this historic capital of the Bhosale Chhatrapati clan of the Maratha Empire. The Mahalakshmi temple and the Panhala fort are the places I'll be covering here. Overnight bus to Panjim.
Day 2: Goa. This day will mark the start of the very beautiful Konkan coast trip. The emerald land on the west coast of India is the perfect place to chill with numerous serene beaches and churches with the Portuguese architectural designs.
Check out this from my recent visit to a small village in the Konkan Region, Nandgaon which had an absolutely beautiful and ZERO crowd beach.
Day 3: Malvan, Devbag. Moving on in the Konkan coast, the next stop is Malvan, famous for the Sindhudurg fort which occupies an islet in the Arabian sea. Later, I'll travel to Devbag where the Karli river meets the Arabian sea.
Day 4: Dhamapur. On this day, I'll be visiting Dhamapur to see the manmade lake made during the 16th century lying between hill ranges on both sides. Later I'll move to Vijaydurg to stay the night.
Day 5: Vijaydurg, Ratanagiri. The first visit of the day will be the Vijaydurg fort built by Raja Bhoj II which is also the oldest fort on this Coast. Next I'll travel to Ratnagiri to rest for the day in its beautiful beach.
Day 6: Malgund, Guhagar. First stop on this day will be Malgund, a small village, with a serene beach. Moving on to another beach nearby, the Guhagar beach, with the Shady Suru trees and a couple of temples and mostly secluded is the perfect stop to relax.
Day 7: Dapoli, Harihareshwar: On this day, firstly, I'll travel to Dapoli, famous for its long stretch of beaches, sea forts and temples. Later on, I'll move to Harihareshwar, the town wherein river Savitri enters the Arabian sea.
Day 8: Diveagar, Raigad. A week into this leg, I'll enter the Raigad District of the coastal region, starting off from the Diveagar Beach. Later, I'll visit the Riagad Fort, built by Chhatrapati Shivaji duting the 17th century.
Day 9: Alibag. Finishing off with the Konkan region, the final stop will be Alibag, known for its unpopulated beaches and intricate temples.
Day 10: Mumbai. Moving on from a very calm and mostly unpopulated experience to the most populous city in India, Mumbai. A day just to revel in the chaos.
Day 11: Matheran, Khandala, Lonavala. Next up is a flurry of Hill stations, starting from Matheran and then moving on to Khandala and Lonavala. Later I'll be travelling to Pune to stay the night.
Day 12: Mahabaleshwar. Another day and another hill station, the town that used to be the summer capital during British Rule. Night stay back at Pune.
Day 13: Nashik. Moving on to the ancient city of Nashik, also famous for the wine grapes agriculture.
Day 14: Anjaneri Mountains. After all the relaxing around beaches and hill stations, time for some trekking at the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, the Anjaneri Fort. Night stay back at Nashik.
Day 15: Aurangabad. Next stop is historically vivid town of Aurangabad. History comprising of both Mughal as well as Maratha Empire is evidently felt as one drives through the city.
Day 16: Ajanta and Ellora. These UNESCO world heritage sites famous for its rock-cut caves with cravings are a must visit place. Night stay back at Aurangabad.
From here on I'll be moving on to Madhya Pradesh as I continue in this journey.
